12/03/08 - Club photo, New committee

1. The Union have finally got their arses in gear and sorted out the club photo. It will be either in the sports centre, or if its really nice weather, on the field next to Rutherford with the Cathedral in the background.

THE DATE IS Tuesday 25th - 3:30-4:30. Then the lesson will be on as normal 5-7.

WE STRONGLY URGE YOU TO COME ALONG, even if you're not training so regularly anymore - the more the merrier! If you do not have a dobok (the white uniform) let us know ASAP and we'll sort you out one to borrow on the day.

PLEASE TURN UP ON TIME as we will be quality checking everyone's uniform. Please don't wear any bright jewellery or tshirts under your dobok (except a white tshirt). Rule of thumb, you should look like you would in a lesson. HOWEVER, girls are of course allowed to wear make up for the photo :)

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

Well, firstly it's obviously great to get everyone from the year together for the photo,
Also, the photo's are available to buy so you can remember this year's club/team. Last year they were very reasonable at £9, or £11 with a frame. They have everyone's name and the Uni crest on them, and look very swish.
The photo will be put up in the sports centre and in the sports bars for everyone to marvel at us for years to come, which is always awesome.

If you want a photo, bring along the cash on the day, £10 should cover the photo, or bring £15 to be sure or if you want it framed :)

Also there will hopefully be a sparring team photo for those in the sparring Team. This includes: Mike, Martin, Ray, Antoni, Lucy, Ricardo, Chan-Be, Vanessa, Kin Shin, Owen Li. If there's anyone i've left out (or you feel you should be in the sparring team photo) please get in touch. Although the sparring team photo is in addition to the main photo, and will only be done if we have time :)

03/03/08 - Nottingham tournament results

Congratulations to UKC taekwondo for it's outstanding performance at the Nottingham tournament! The results included:

Lucy Zai: Gold
Antoni Kujawa: Gold
Chan-Be: Silver
KinShin: Bronze
Lucia: Bronze

Also Sellinge Club affiliate Stephen Stanley got Silver!

Drinks will be had in Woody's after Tuesday's training session to celebrate. Well done to all those involved!

18/01/08 - Birmingham Open 2008, Grading Social 2.0, Hoodys

1. Please click here for details of the 3rd Annual Birmingham Open Taekwondo Tournament. This will be held on Saturday the 16th of February. If you wish to compete - send in your Name/weight/gender/grade info to me ASAP. Please bear in mind tho, that this is a warm up for the BUSA championships and if you can only do one comp this year, it is better that you do the other one ( which will be on 1st March at either Bristol or Nottingham Universities). Transport to Brimingham will be sorted based on level of participation. If you wish to come along to spectate then let us know as well :)

2. Hoodys - yes we are getting them again, get your orders in asap.

3. So many people have said that they loved the Grading Social that i've decided to run it again - but with a slight change of format.

We'll be sat in one pub all night doing drinking games, and the black belt trail is 'optional'. Although im sure everyone who got black last time will be going for their second dan!

Pub to be confirmed but shall probably be either Mungos on campus or Wetherspoons in town. Probably go to Girls and Boys nightclub after...

10/12/07 - Hoodys, Doboks, and Club Photo

1.The Hoodies have arrived and shall be distributed during tuesday's lesson. Please try to come and collect them on this day, even if you are not training.

2. One note about Doboks (the white uniforms for training). You are not obliged to buy them, however it would be nice if most of the members were to have at least one to train in. It both looks smart and shows a real commitment to the sport.

Furthermore, and most importantly, the club photo in late february/early march is available to those wearing doboks only. Of course we want every member to show up on this day, but it is a necessity that everyone in the photo wears a uniform.

The reason we tell you this now is that in February you may not feel it worth buying a dobok for the 3 or 4 months or so left of the academic year - however if you wish to be in the photo and buy a dobok now you will get at least six months good wear out of it. And of course most doboks last years so when you return next year it will not be a problem for you at all :) Maybe a nice Christmas present to ask for?

Those who wish to have 'UKC TAEKWONDO' printed down their leg are welcome to leave their dobok bottoms with Mike over Christmas and he shall try to get them all done for the start of next term. It costs £7 and the printing is professionally down and will most likely outlast the garment itself. If you are interested simply leave your dobok (with your name pinned to it) and the £7 with Mike after your next training session.

20/11/07 - Get Involved!

1. Tuesday's session (tonight) will see the committee carrying out their forefeit from Street Fighter Social of having to wear their Street Fighter Costumes to the lesson and train in them... Feel free to come watch and poke fun at them even if you're not able to train that day!

2. After the lesson on Tuesday the committee will introduce themselves again before holding a committee meeting (probably over a beer or two in woodys) which you are all invited to attend. Committee meetings are always available to all UKC TKD Members to participate, and we're keen to hear your views on how our still growing/developing club can proceed!

3. Sparring session on saturday is cancelled due to a request from Darwin college that the Missing Link (where we train) be used all day for a conference. As they have been so gracious in granting us use of the hall every saturday for the rest of the year we felt compelled to grant them their request.

4. Many congratulations to the first members of the Sparring Team who took part in the friendly UCTA tournament in Sellindge. It was a steep learning curve for all concerned but still all the team brought back medals and trophies each. There will be further try-outs for the sparring team in the near future on a saturday sparring session which we invite all members to come and watch, or even better yet - have a go yourself!

5. UKC Taekwondo is in a unique position to obtain a gift of £300 from the Union for the purpose of buying much needed sparring and lesson equipment. As a recently revived club with a small membership fee we don't receive the same 'generous' budgets that other clubs do, and what money we do get goes straight on advertising, instructors fees and other boring things. This money from the sports development fund would greatly enhance the quality of every member's training/lessons as well as providing the club with the possibility of representing the University at national championships...

However, in order to get this £300 we need to raise £150 ourselves towards the club - as such we are asking for your ideas! So far the ideas of a cookie sale (you know who you are) and a club raffle have been suggested, but we're always looking for more ideas and further development of the ideas we have. If anyone has any ideas or wants to get involved in fundraising we invite you to email us, facebook us, or better yet - come along to the committee meeting after tuesday's session.

6. GET INVOLVED! "Ask not what UKC Taekwondo can do for you, ask what you can do for UKC Taekwondo!"

We've enjoyed the participation of many new members this year which has been vital considering that over 3/4 of last year's members graduated or returned to the USA/Japan/etc at the end of the year, but we're always looking for more! So far this year we've seen the emergence of the first UKC Taekwondo Sparring Team for 15 years and an offical club photographer. There are also ad hoc socials planned by individuals through Facebook and through classes and this is amazing, and we want more! If you feel you have a special talent, or moreover you just want to contribute in any way then let us know - this is your club and we hope you will gain valuable experience and skills for the world of work after University, as well as becoming kick-ass black belts!

As you may have noticed, UKC Taekwondo is one of the more egalitarian clubs on campus with no rigid structure and a committee that does not see itself as any more important than any of its members - heck most committee members this year are not bothering to put their position on their hoody - not because they are not proud of their position, but simply because they do not wish to be separated from the rest of the club. This means that the club is traditionally representative of its members in a way not many other clubs are - as it is what you make it... So if you feel you have something to contribute, or just want to get more involved then get involved!

02/11/07 - Sparring Pictures, Birmingham Trip, Hoodys

Hoodys - Are still available to order, you have until 7th November to give us your money. Please note that if you have not paid, you will not get a hoody whether you have put your name down or not.

T-Shirts - Can be ordered all year round. The new design with the logo on the front and 'kick me' on the back comes at the same price - in the same colour/tshirt choices as the old tshirt.

Trip to Buuuurming'am - So far quite a few people want to go (6 confirmed, 3 waiting on if they can get out of work). If you want to come the details are as follows:

Cost will be around £50 or £75 (for two-nights stay), which includes petrol money up there and back, as well as one nights stay in a bed & breakfast. The B&B will be 2 to a room (single beds) with ensuite bathroom facilities and breakfast (if we're up that early from the night before). There is an option possibly to upgrade to a single room if you prefer, for about an extra £10 a night.

There are Two options

ONE: We leave Friday afternoon, get ther Friday night, throw our bags in the rooms and go out drinking. We then wake up saturday morning and go training for 11:00-13:00, then shower and go to the AGM. Afterwards we go out for a meal and drive back.

TWO: The best of both worlds, we drive up friday night - have a few drinks and go to bed. Saturday training11-1, AGM 2-5pm and then meal and go out on the town driving back on sunday morning. This option however will cost an extra £25 for the extra night's stay. This would be the best option but i know it's short notice and a bit more expensive. If you do want to do this though let us know as it would be the best way to do it.

28/10/2007 - BSTF at the University of Birmingham, Street Fighter social

BSTF AGM and Training at the University of Birmingham - The British Student Taekwondo Federation will be meeting at the University of Birmingham on Saturday the 10th November. They will be discussing: BUSA and the Taekwondo Championship in 2008, possibilities of merging WTF and ITF competions, the annual trip to Hungary for all University Taekwondo clubs in July 2008, details on the BSTF large competition (probably either at UWE or Birmingham in April 2008), and electing next years BSTF committee members and positions.

The AGM is at 2pm, and there will also be training at the University from 11-1pm open to all insured students. This would be a great introduction to the way TKD is practiced elsewhere and meet the kinds of people you're going to either fight against at the competitions and/or drink with on holiday in Hungary.

However you don't need to train if you don't want to, it should be a fun enjoyable day out for all concerned. If lots of people wish to go we may even organise a hotel and go out drinking that night or the night before.

IF YOU'RE INTERESTED YOU MUST LET US KNOW BY THIS THURSDAY/FRIDAY AT THE LATEST. If not many people want to go then the committee will just drive up on our own, and people with cars are more than welcome to follow. Hopefully tho we'll have a minibus full of people.

Street Fighter Social - Don't forget the Street Fighter Social on the 14th November in the Lighthouse. £2 entry to the works for everyone who dresses up, there will also be drinking games, videogames and our own DJ: DJ CRACKAJACK.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COSTUMES READY SOON AS THERE WILL BE A RUSH ON THE COSTUME SHOPS IN TOWN THE WEEK BEFORE THE EVENT.

So far Kendo and Capoeira have also been invited to this event, we're also planning on inviting the Boxing club - make sure that UKC Taekwondo 'represents' and has the best costumes there!

Costume ideas: Street Fighter Characters, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Halo, World of Warcraft, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, Mario Brothers, etc etc.... the world is your oyster - just keep in mind the videogame/cartoon character theme :D

24/10/2007 - Hoodys, Saturday sparring session, and Street fighter social

Hoodys – For all those who are interested please remember we are taking orders for hoodys for the next 2 weeks.
They cost £30 which includes: embroidery of your name/nickname, embroidery of Taekwondo in Hangul on the left breast, embroidery of the WTF symbol as a patch on the right arm, printing of 'indomitable spirit' on the left arm in big, and printing of the logo in big on the back. The hoodys are made from beefy Gildan which are much better than the regular Union hoodys.
Once we have ordered you will not be able to order another one until at the earliest March, or more likely next year - so make sure to get your money in asap if you want one!

Saturday Sparring Session - 12-2pm Missing Link - Sparring Sessions start this saturday for all those with the extra insurance. If you have not got insurance you are welcome to come watch but i'm afraid for legal reasons you will not be able to spar. If you wish to bring money for hoodys/sparring insurance/tshirts or whatever you're also welcome to come along and sort that out.

Street Fighter Social - 14th November - put it in your diaries! This year's Street Fighter Social will be in the lighthouse then moving down to the Venue. We're working on discount drinks and reduced entry to the Venue for anyone who dresses up. We also have our own DJ and a prize for the best costume!
IT'S ONLY 3 WEEKS AWAY so start thinking about buying/renting costumes or pieces to make costumes. We'll be holding an informal drop-in session (probably in a pub) for people to come along and discuss their costume ideas and also get tips and ideas for those who are completely stuck. Another email with information about discounts at costume shops in town we've managed to obtain will be coming your way shortly!

14/10/2007 - Film Night

Monday 22nd October - Film night in a Lecture Theatre (probably in Grimond again), watching a film on the massive projectors. The film is Dollyochagi, a Korean teen-comedy with a link to Taekwondo.

Unfortunately the film is in Korean with English subtitles only (its a vcd with no other options), so remember to bring your glasses if you need them to read subtitles.

We'll be ordering in Pizza and bringing our own beer and soft drinks, and we encourage you to do the same. Pizza menus will be available and we'll probably order all together.

After the film is over, you're welcome to follow us to the Works for the rest of the night.

Dare to be Social – Wednesday 10th October will see our second annual meet & greet social, with ‘social dares’ and membership raffle draw. The ‘social dares’ are lots of fun and a great way to meet people and make memories, and don’t be scared – last year even the most timid of members joined in and really enjoyed themselves.
Membership Raffle – Anybody and everybody who joins the club by Tuesday (9th October) will automatically be entered into our membership raffle draw with such cool prizes as: Years membership to UCTA with sparring insurance and dobok, two year long que jump passes to the works, 3 VIP tickets for que jump and free entry to the Venue on a night of your choice, Martial Arts DVDs and UKC TKD T-shirts (whatever size you like). Hoodys – Everyone is asking about ordering Hoodys, so to let everyone know what the deal is – unlike the tshirts which can be bought at any time all year long, hoodys are only bought in one batch due to the immense printing and cost involved. This year’s hoodys will be of the same design as last year with only minor changes. As such they should not cost much more that last year, and we will ensure the cost is not above £30. You may pick any size but medium and large tend to suit everyone, and you can have your name or nickname or whatever (within reason) embroidered which is included in the cost. We are thinking of ordering the Hoodys in late October so make sure you have enough money left over from your loans to buy one :)

30/9/2007 – Private Party at Works and Training/Club Membership

Monday 1st October is our private party at the works nightclub with the American Footballers, Cheerleaders and now the football society as well. Details to come soon so check your emails!

**Training and Club Membership**
Many people have asked what the situation is with training and club membership. Until the 8th October Lessons are free to try for non-members, beyond this we ask that everyone pay their club membership in order to train. It’s only £10 for a whole years training, and can be done through the union website (fairly easily) – check out our join page for details.

Beyond the 8th October our lessons are free to try for people coming along for the first time for up to TWO SESSIONS. If you like the classes and wish to continue beyond two classes we ask that you pay your membership fee.

Membership packs will be distributed from the 8th October, and don’t forget our PRIZE RAFFLE DRAW on the 10th October where all members who have joined by October 10th are automatically entered. Prizes include: Membership to the UCTA (with insurance and uniform), 3 VIP entry passes to the Venue, Martial Arts DVDs and club tshirts, and the possibility of Works que jump passes (to be confirmed).
